Introduction: Border, Frontier and the Geography of Rule at the Margins of the State

Borders are geographic boundaries of political entities or legal jurisdictions , such as governments , sovereign states , federated states , and other subnational entities. Borders are established through agreements between political or social entities that control those areas; the creation of these agreements is called boundary delimitation. Some borders—such as most state's internal administrative border, or inter-state borders within the Schengen Area —are open and completely unguarded. Most external borders are partially or fully controlled, and may be crossed legally only at designated border checkpoints and border zones may be controlled. Borders may even foster the setting up of buffer zones.

Peter Wallace Hartwick College. Abstract Political geographers draw distinctions in English between borders, usually conceived of as lines on a map, and frontiers, which are seen as zones. In German, Grenze, a word borrowed from Slavic, and reflecting ethnic differences is often used for both. It will then trace the historical development in Europe of these concepts from antiquity into the early modern period. The essay questions both the historical depth of nations, states, and borders and the teleological assumption of their inevitability and permanence in human political relations.

It also investigates emerging research perspectives that appear to be important drivers of conceptual change from the perspective of human geography. The authors stress that the present state of debate indicate that contemporary border studies question the rationales behind everyday border-making by understanding borders as institutions, processes and symbols. A particular attention is paid to the process of reconfiguring state borders in terms of territorial control, security and sovereignty and to the nexus between everyday life-worlds, power relations and constructions of social borders. Discreteness supposes that borders really exist, that they mark and structure space, and separate different phenomena from each other. The continuity of borders denies at the same time their objective existence and gives rise to the problem of their identification. The study of borders in society has progressed remarkably since its geographically bounded beginnings in the nineteenth century.

The authors examine the role of the state, ethnicity, transnationalism, border symbols, rituals and identity in an effort to understand how nationalism informs.
