Learn how to model social and economic networks and their impact on human behavior. How do networks form, why do they exhibit certain patterns, and how does their structure impact diffusion, learning, and other behaviors? We will bring together models and techniques from economics, sociology, math, physics, statistics and computer science to answer these questions. The course begins with some empirical background on social and economic networks, and an overview of concepts used to describe and measure networks. Next, we will cover a set of models of how networks form, including random network models as well as strategic formation models, and some hybrids. We will then discuss a series of models of how networks impact behavior, including contagion, diffusion, learning, and peer influences. Really enjoyed this course.

It has become a hub for research on social and economic networks, and so the visit was particularly interesting. Gabrielle Demange and Francis Bloch organized an excellent workshop in which participants presented fresh and on-going research relating to network economics. I also enjoyed meeting many students and colleagues and talk about their projects ranging from network patterns of international trade, to econometrics of network formation, to the field work on networks in developing countries, to the allocation of production in dynamic networks. Francis Bloch and I had some time to work together on an ongoing project trying to understand various measures of centrality and influence of nodes as a function of their position in networks. I also had the opportunity to give a talk in the Parisian Game Theory Seminar, and connect with many friends and other researchers in the area. Paris is an amazing city to visit - especially for me having spent some years here as a child - it is a vibrant place: full of history, culture, and energy. It is great to see the strong research community coming together, and to see the Paris School of Economics becoming more than the sum of its parts.

DOI: We examine the dynamic formation and stochastic evolution of networks connecting individuals whose payoffs from an economic or social activity depends on the network structure in place. Over time, individuals form and sever links connecting themselves to other individuals based on the improvement the resulting network offers them relative to the current network. Such a process creates a sequence of networks that we call an 'improving path'. View PDF.
Networks of relationships help determine the careers that people choose, the jobs they obtain, the products they buy, and how they vote. The many aspects of our lives that are governed by social networks make it critical to understand how they impact behavior, which network structures are likely to emerge in a society, and why we organize ourselves as we do. In Social and Economic Networks , Matthew Jackson offers a comprehensive introduction to social and economic networks, drawing on the latest findings in economics, sociology, computer science, physics, and mathematics. He provides empirical background on networks and the regularities that they exhibit, and discusses random graph-based models and strategic models of network formation. He helps readers to understand behavior in networked societies, with a detailed analysis of learning and diffusion in networks, decision making by individuals who are influenced by their social neighbors, game theory and markets on networks, and a host of related subjects. Jackson also describes the varied statistical and modeling techniques used to analyze social networks. Each chapter includes exercises to aid students in their analysis of how networks function.

This is a short essay that highlights a few of the areas in which the literature has made substantial progress, discusses what enabled this progress, as well as where current tools are poised to make further contributions, and points out some of the most important open problems.
