Unit 1 The Challenge of Sustainable Development

In the first Human Development Report introduced a new approach for advancing human wellbeing. Human development — or the human development approach - is about expanding the richness of human life, rather than simply the richness of the economy in which human beings live. It is an approach that is focused on people and their opportunities and choices. People: human development focuses on improving the lives people lead rather than assuming that economic growth will lead, automatically, to greater wellbeing for all. Income growth is seen as a means to development, rather than an end in itself. Opportunities: human development is about giving people more freedom to live lives they value. For example, educating a girl would build her skills, but it is of little use if she is denied access to jobs, or does not have the right skills for the local labour market.

What aspects of ourselves change and develop as we journey through life? We move through significant physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes throughout our lives—do these changes happen in a systematic way, and to everyone? How much is due to genetics and how much is due to environmental influences and experiences both within our personal control and beyond? Is there just one course of development or are there many different courses of development? Figure 1. Human development encompasses the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes that occur throughout a lifetime. Human development refers to the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development of humans throughout the lifespan.

You might have listed some of the following words: change, consumption, economic development, economic growth, education, entitlements, equality, equity, freedom, gender equity, goals, good governance, Gross Domestic Product GDP , health, human development, human rights, income, justice, livelihoods, Millennium Development Goals MDGs , participation, peace, positive change, poverty reduction, process of change, production, progress, reducing vulnerability, responsibilities, self-determination, social development, social inclusion, sustainability, targets, wealth. A multitude of meanings is attached to the idea of development; the term is complex, contested, ambiguous, and elusive. However, in the simplest terms, development can be defined as bringing about social change that allows people to achieve their human potential. An important point to emphasise is that development is a political term: it has a range of meanings that depend on the context in which the term is used, and it may also be used to reflect and to justify a variety of different agendas held by different people or organisations. The idea of development articulated by the World Bank, for instance, is very different from that promoted by Greenpeace activists.

Human development is a lifelong process of physical, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional growth and change. In the early stages of life—from babyhood to childhood, childhood to adolescence, and adolescence to adulthood—enormous changes take place.

The book includes all of the mathematical detail required to fully describe these techniques, and is strong in statistical rigour; all models are presented with assumptions, model diagnostics to verify these assumptions and alternative approaches where appropriate. Yet, there is also a major practical element to the book. The statistical theory is interspersed with illustrative examples from published research studies using a variety of study designs and settings. These serve to demonstrate to the reader the context within which each of the analyses would be relevant and how the findings from such analyses should be interpreted. These examples bring the theory to life and are invaluable in highlighting the research questions which may motivate the use of these methods. A particularly useful feature of the book is the provision of code and output from the statistical software, Stata.

About Human Development

This chapter describes how the human organism grows and develops from fertilization through death. The following stages of life are described in detail: germinal stage, embryonic stage, fetal stage, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Since Vanessa is three months pregnant, they are worried about whether Vanessa was also exposed to lead. If so, what effects could it have on the developing baby?

Human development , the process of growth and change that takes place between birth and maturity. Human growth is far from being a simple and uniform process of becoming taller or larger. As a child gets bigger, there are changes in shape and in tissue composition and distribution. In the newborn infant the head represents about a quarter of the total length; in the adult it represents about one-seventh. In the newborn infant the muscles constitute a much smaller percentage of the total body mass than in the young adult.

In the context of the physical development of children, growth refers to the increase in the size of a child, and development refers to the process by which the child develops his or her psychomotor skills. The period of human growth from birth to adolescence is commonly divided into the following stages:. Growth curves are used to measure growth. The distance curve is a measure of size over time; it records height as a function of age and gets higher with age. The velocity curve measures the rate of growth at a given time for a particular body feature such as height or weight. The height velocity curve is highest in infancy, up to two years of age, with more consistent annual growth afterwards and increases again at puberty. The height of a five-year-old usually doubles relative to that at birth.
