Robert Nozick, Anarchy State and Utopia.pdf

In , Robert Nozick's book Anarchy, State, and Utopia moved libertarianism from a relatively neglected subset of political philosophy to the center of the discipline, as one of the most cogent critiques of social democracy and egalitarian liberalism. Nozick developed a rights-based account of libertarianism to show that a minimal state can legitimately arise, that nothing more than a minimal state is justified, and that the minimal state is not only morally right, but can also be an inspiring 'meta-utopia'. This volume presents Nozick's contributions to political philosophy in the context of his work in analytical philosophy. It also provides a biography of Nozick and considers the initial reception and long-term influence of his work. Biography 2. Critical Exposition 3. Reception and Influence 4.

It won the US National Book Award in category Philosophy and Religion , [1] has been translated into 11 languages, and was named one of the " most influential books since the war" — by the UK Times Literary Supplement. In opposition to A Theory of Justice by John Rawls , and in debate with Michael Walzer , [3] Nozick argues in favor of a minimal state , "limited to the narrow functions of protection against force, theft, fraud, enforcement of contracts, and so on. To support the idea of the minimal state, Nozick presents an argument that illustrates how the minimalist state arises naturally from anarchy and how any expansion of state power past this minimalist threshold is unjustified. Nozick's entitlement theory , which sees humans as ends in themselves and justifies redistribution of goods only on condition of consent, is a key aspect of Anarchy, State, and Utopia. The book also contains a vigorous defense of minarchist libertarianism against more extreme views, such as anarcho-capitalism in which there is no state and individuals must contract with private companies for all social services. Nozick argues that anarcho-capitalism would inevitably transform into a minarchist state, even without violating any of its own non-aggression principles , through the eventual emergence of a single locally dominant private defense and judicial agency that it is in everyone's interests to align with, because other agencies are unable to effectively compete against the advantages of the agency with majority coverage. Therefore, even to the extent that the anarcho-capitalist theory is correct, it results in a single, private, protective agency which is itself a de facto "state".

It substantially responds to Rawls, despite ranging over many topics. That is, Rawls depicts bargainers as separate consumers , entitled to separate shares , while dismissing the separateness of what they do as arbitrary. Part II continues to pound on the incongruousness of respecting our separateness as consumers see his discussions of distributing grades and mates while implicitly denigrating and even denying our separateness as producers. Part III argues that true utopia would not impose a favored vision of utopia while silencing incompatible rivals. It would instead be a cooperative society for mutual advantage, premised on everyone coming to the table with a robust right to say no to unattractive offers. Blood was gushing from the wounds in his back, making the ground treacherous around his feet. The jutting finger of rock was now forty paces from him. He gazed down at the silver axe - and felt his wounds heal, his strength flooding back into his frame. There is a little pus, but the blood is fresh and the scab contains no corruption. He surveyed the land and a distant house that showed faintly in the darkness atop a small sandy bluff.

In contrast to Rawls, who puts justice at the center of his theory, Nozick maintains that the primary notion should be rights or liberties. With that assumption in place, Nozick argues that a minimal state is the only just state, and that any state more extensive violates fundamental liberties. Professor Gendler proceeds to introduce and discuss the central elements of the seventh chapter of Anarchy, State, and Utopia : the notions of justice in acquisition, justice in transfer, and the Lockean Proviso. It plays the role with regard to the legitimacy of an institution that truth plays with regard to the legitimacy of a system of thought.
